I took the Christmas Stockings for the Homeless to the shelter on Dec 23rd and had a long overdue visit with my friend and a real life angel, Miss Sarah Conerly at the Greater Hope Homeless Shelter. The Greater Hope Homeless shelter is one of our 3 farm charities.

Some of you may recall her incredible story from a post I made from my first visit over 2 years ago. If not you can catch up on it here. Or you can also watch one of my early YouTube videos on the visit.

Now, nothing has changed with Sarah since I last visited with her, except some new hardware in her knees giving her an extra bounce in her step, but a lot has changed with her homeless shelter. The transformation is amazing. The community has helped transform a run down vacant building into a place where people can get a helping hand. It is hard to imagine that not long ago she was fighting McComb for the right to keep the building.

In my visit, it is her stories that are most impactful. Some people are holding out on their own, living in their vehicles and coming to the shelter to get a meal and a shower. Some folks are working but can't get by on their own. Some have a family dispute and have no family to stay with. Some face a sudden eviction and have no place to go. All too often it is te elderly who are evicted. Some as old as 92.

She shares how her heart breaks for those with disabilities that struggle to stay afloat. One man was once a successful tradesman but suffered multiple heart attacks, struggles with speech now and is having a hard time getting by. Some weeks he can't afford his medication and Sarah has been there to help.

Don't think for one second, her help comes without rules and structure. As I am there, she sends marching orders to clean the kitchen, there will be no mess at Miss Sarah's and it shows. The shelter is neat and tidy. Men can stay if they work on getting jobs and their own housing. Some do work already and just cannot afford housing.

My favorite part of our discussion is hearing about how her kindness is spreading. She shares how a lady is looking for information on creating a much needed addiction center. Or that there is now a new women's shelter GUEST House of Hope that exists in McComb.
I point out to her that she is likely the spark of kindness that inspires others and she brushes it off. Truly she is though. I know I always leave a visit with her wanting to be a better person. That is the effect she has on you.

Ask her what she needs and she replies. "I cannot ask for more we are operating, we have food and the lights are on, I am grateful and blessed".  Despite her humbleness there is always a need somewhere.

I am so proud to know you Conerly Jordan Sarah, you inspire me to be a better human and McComb is so lucky to have you.

Special thanks to those who helped make the 8 stockings possible for the shelter this year.
